I have a Cisco 2960G L2 Switch that I have been working on and was wondering if it is at all possible to have one vlan communicate with another vlan on the same switch without using a router? I have read that it is possible if you plug a crossover cable into one access port in one vlan and the other end of the cable in the access port in the other vlan. Anyone have any experience doing this kind implementation?

Nope this still shouldn't work.The reason is the use of VLAN tags. If you send a message to VLAN 3 with a VLAN 2 tag it will not allow it work. You must have a layer 3 device to go through.
Now having said that, I haven't tried it but I do believe my theory is sound.
Interested now to hear if anyone has tried it. If I have time, I'll try to see if I can make it happen here on a 3560 (Layer 3) without implementing routing in between vlans.

Hey Ronnie/Kyle,
I would think that if the crossover is connected to an access port then the VLAN tags would have been stripped by the switch and the packets sent without VLAN headers, any packets would traverse between the two VLANs and communicate, assuming the same subnet was used on both VLAN's.
It's possible the Cisco may report an error in the logs about a VLAN mismatch?
I could be wrong though as Ronnie is more knowledgeable than I am.

I need to test this for sure now.Just tested and verified. This does work. You bypass the VLANs if you hook a crossover between. I'm sad to say that I was wrong but had to test it.
