Solved HSRP failover question

Hello, I need some clarification on HSRP groups please. I thought all interfaces that were included in an HSRP group were forced to failover at once?

So if you have gi0/0 and gi0/1 in the same HSRP group and you shut the gi0/0 interface down, gi0/1 would failover to the other router too?

Great question! It's not instaneous in its reaction to a failure. In HSRP the standby router will take over only after the holddown timer expires (approximately missing 3 hellos from active router, by default). This is influenced in real implementation by routing protocol convergence timers and even HSRP timers configured. If everything is left to defaults then failover becomes automatic but not instanteous.

Thanks for your reply. Ya, I must not have waited long enough in my lab because it appeared to fail over the interface I shut down pretty consistently, but didn't seem to fail the other interface over to the active router... I was able to get around that by using tracks/sla mechanism, but I think I'll go back and run with the default config to see how long it takes to failover other interfaces in the same group.

hm. If you can show the config on how you have it we might be able to troubleshoot a little bit. There are plenty of good Cisco peeps within the ITProTV family that can probably help see things too!
