Hi Mike Rodrick.
On the Course “MCSA Windows Server 2016 – 70-742 (Identity with Windows Server 2016), on episode, “Configure a Complex AD Environment, I have a question.
In the episode, at 14:25, in your example, in your corp.itpro.tv domain, you have the member server “uk-dc01”, where you installed AD and made it a “child-domain”. On the Deployment Configuration page, you selected:
• Add a new domain to an existing forest
• Select domain type, you selected “Child Domain
• Parent domain: corp.itpro.tv
• New domain name: uk
This is great info. I have a question with a different scenario in my environment.
We currently have 2 separate domains, in 2 separate Forests, with each having their own domain controllers with their own Active Directory. However, for their domain names, they do have the same contagious name space. For example:
• Domain 1: business.com
• Domain 2: vocs.business.com
I noticed that in your example, you started with a “member server” that was already in the existing corp.itpro.tv domain. In my example, I have a domain controller that is in a different domain/forest.
Understandably, Domain 2 already has its own users, shares, groups, etc.
My questions:
- How would we make vocs.business.com a child-domain of business.com?
1a. While keeping this Active Directory intact, with usernames/groups, etc.
Please note, our naming convention makes it so no user has the same username in both domains/forests.
Both domain controllers (from the different domains) are running in a virtualized environment. - Is this scenario even do-able?
- Or, would we have to create a new member server (named vocs.business.com) in Domain 1 (business.com); Then repeat your steps in the video, like on 14:25 (from the example above) making a new child-domain; Then re-create the users/groups/shares, etc., from scratch?
I hope my question makes sense. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or need me to explain the environment better.
Thanks
