This might seem a redundant question but I rather ask than waste time studying for the wrong certificate. We know Cisco CCENT exam will be eliminated and CCNA (R&W) will be replaced with an new CCNA. I just started studying for CCENT like a month ago and now this change. Are the old and new CCNA (R&W) certificates on equal footing? Assuming I can obtain the old CCNA (R& W)( I know first i have to obtain the CCENT)prior to February 24th 2020, can I move from there to taking the new CCNP( 2 exams)?

You've got two possible choices here in the next 7 months:
-
you can do the ICND1 (CCENT) and ICND2 exams to earn the CCNA R+S
-
you can take the single exam CCNA exam
I suggest you pursue the current CCNA R+S now then you will have to recertify in 3 years under the new CCNA. This will mean that you will know the majority of the content and only really have to learn about 20 to 30% for recertification
But if you do earn the current CCNA R+S now, you can begin working on the new CCNP which is only two exams.
You will not be able use the CCENT towards the new CCNA after 24 Feb. That also means that earning only the CCENT before 24 Feb will only earn you a retired certification...so you must pursue your CCNA R+S.
