Hello,
I created the Netinstal.nbi from System Image Utility with out errors. I put this folder in the root of the external HD
I used automater to select get specific finder items and selected the Netinstall.nbi folder
I went to bless boot image folder,. named it and click run. I ran fine, no errors.
I restarted my Mac holding down the option key and my external HD came up as an option to boot with.
I selected my ex HD, it ran then I got the choices, use Time machine, reinstall x and two other choices which I don't remember. I clicked on reinstall OS X and I was taken to the box under my user ID and password. I did that then OS X started to download from apple site.
I wanted to use my Netinstall instead.
My hd was set to be bootable, I verified that.
Please any thought. I am a new member and really like all this site has to offer.

Netinstall booting off of external hard drive

Jim,
Sorry I have not been able to answer this question for you. I keep putting it off because I haven't had time to whip up some lab machines and get a specific answer. In the mean time, here is my best guess without having done a test.
I'm pretty certain you cannot do a NetInstall from a removable drive like you are attempting. Again, I could be wrong as I haven't had a chance to test it out. The NetInstall system boots from installation media (in your case the removable drive) and then reaches out looking for a NetInstall server to pull the actual image from. If all you have is the removable disk, then no NetInstall server is found and the image is then pulled straight from Apple.
I'll try and lab this up soon so I can answer you for certain, but you have already waited a long time and I wanted to get you some kind of answer at least.

Hi Don,
Thank you for your comment and time.I found a U Tube that explains the process and it can only be done though the server, as you thought.
I just jumped into this certification process without any experience and just basic knowledge of the Mac. The cool thing while trying to understand Netinstall, I checked out Iceberg and it didn't seem to work as I hoped it would, it kept crashing. I downloaded Packages, was able to build packages for my Mac, run it and it worked!! On to the next discovery.
