CCNP Encore (350-401) Wireless

Good evening Ronnie and Anthony,
I have just finished the wireless section of the CCNP Encor. I am famiiar with the Cisco WLCs'. A few years back we used to have the cisco 4400 wlcs', but when they decide to upgrade the wireless network, they choose Meraki Aps' instead, which is half cloud based and half on prem solution. These are also from Cisco. How do these wireless concepts, states and roaming principles fit into a Meraki environment? Hope you understand what i am trying to ask here.

Many of the concepts do carry over pretty well. The Meraki APs are essentially using a FlexConnect type of operation.

As you know, the WLC functionality is only in the cloud in the Meraki solution.

What is very interesting now is the fact that the "traditional" WLC from Cisco can now be cloud-based. You can use the virtual WLC from Cisco in AWS to provide the control plane. You use a VPN to AWS for the APs to communicate with the controller.

So they two solutions are certainly going to be emulating each other more and more until it is one product line I would bet.

Thanks for the update.. The virtual WLC from Cisco in AWS , you said that you would use a vpn to AWS for the APs to communicate. I would bet that there is an additional cost for those vpn tunnels per location. With the Meraki we use an MX appliance as the gateway to the cloud.
