In the CompTIA fundamentals courses Don and Ronny frequently mention liking FileZilla, but in those courses also recommend not using CNET or SourceForge because they bundle other junk on much of the software these days. I was looking at FileZilla's Wikipedia page and it says it's hosted on SourceForge. Yeah I know they used to be reputable, but wondering if there are any trustworthy freeware sites left?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FileZilla

Where is best place to download FileZilla?
-
Paul,
If possible, always try to go to the source page if there's a download from there. It's not that every other site is necessarily evil or bad but they tend to include additional materials like downloaders and third party applications and toolbars they want you to install. Then some sites will always add adware ( I know, try saying it twice).

FWIW, I've heard good things about https://ninite.com/. Haven't been a windows user for a number of years, so YMMV.

Thanks for the reply, Ronnie. But unless I'm mistaken even on the FileZilla site through their download links point to SourceForge for the actual download do they not?
-
Paul,
I see that now. I don't know much about the site that Julian Lam mentioned but I do trust Julian Lam since he's the designer of our awesome forum site. So I will defer to him!

In my environment (education), we use ninite as the primary way to install FileZilla (among other things) since it installs the most updated version and ignores any sort of bundlware.
-
I agree with above. Always go to the source to download files.
-
In this case the source directs the download to SourceForge unfortunately as their host, Kevin.
-
I appreciate, Ronnie, Kevin, Julian's and your response, David. I guess one has to ask though if FileZilla chooses to use SourceForge as their host does ninite.com also use a download derived from SourceForge, especially after it's updated over time etc.

SourceForge is an Open Source repository. I only found one video screen capture software on SourceForge that had Malware. Outside of that I woud trust download links from the author pointing to SourceForge. It is the author (developer) of the software that you have to trust when it comes to SourceForge repository. Therefore this is really still getting the file from the author of the software.

https://www.ninite.com. Ninite is a fabulous, one stop resource for downloading utilities like that. None of the crap-ware bundled like download.com. Ninite also has a premium, ongoing maintenance offering for business and personal which is how they fund themselves. But you can do a one time download for free. As a Windows admin, I typically hit Ninite for new builds so I can quickly get some key things like PDF Readers. If it is a utility box, I also frequently download Firefox, NotePad++, 7-Zip, WinMerge, WinDirStat, PuTTy, and WinSCP among the usuals. I do a lot of VMware administration which is why I get PuTTy and WinSCP.
