I was listening to Media storage and got to thinking could electrical wires and transformers affect the magnetic data on tapes like VCR? If so how far away should they be kept from such sources?

Magnetic medias vs Magnetic fields

Hey @Stephen-Smith great question, any situation that components can great a magnetic field, there is the possibility to distort magnetic storage media. Most often electrical lines will cause electro-magnetic interference (EMI) within communication lines.

Just my two cents: That is a huge nut to crack but one good rule of thumb is: "Time, Distance, Shielding & Radition Strength" as the mantra for protecting your media. If you really are serious you will buy a meter to survey and document your storage location.
Efforts in preserving magnetic media also requires considering a host of other factors that can actually be more hazardous than magnets or EMF. You may find the following link of benefit to review. https://www.nakivo.com/blog/magnetic-tape-backup-best-practices/
Best wishes on your battle to preserve!
