First IT Job.

I am currently working through the A+ course here on ITPRO.TV, I am looking to change careers. I currently install home security and before that I was in construction for almost a decade. I am looking to position myself for cyber security in the future. The question I have is what tips does anyone have for someone with no real IT history to get noticed out in the job market?

One of the best ways to get noticed is by NETWORKING! And I'm not talking Ethernet or Wifi here. You need to get plugged into the community so that people there start recognizing your name. Make sure that you're posting about stuff you're learning and projects you're working on. Engage with others in that community by liking, resharing, and commenting on stuff you find interesting. Also, attend conferences, webinars, and training. Join an in-person group and if there's not one available, then start one. That's the kind of stuff that will show off your passion and skills.

Totally agree with the wisdom of @daniel-lowrie87 We can sometimes get so focused on the tech or techniques that we forget that it's going to be a human being on the other end offering you a job. Getting to know and follow leaders in the cybersecurity field will open up opportunities much faster. Another tip I give to folks is: VOLUNTEER. As you learn things, turn around and teach them to others. I know a guy that would go down to the local senior center and have people bring in their laptops so that he could "harden" them and give them tips on how not to fall for phishing techniques. It helps others, makes you feel better about yourself (helping always does), and it will definitely be noticed in your community. You might even put together some little YouTube videos on your journey to becoming a cybersecurity expert.
