Hello, I would like some direction on use of pfSense in one bare-metal computer with a few virtual machines also installed. Basically I would like to know what pitfalls I may encounter with doing this. While I understand that there is no perfect way to isolate the VMs from each other, given the limitations of the project I would like to more fully explain the risks of doing so and how best to avoid these. Thank you for your guidance in this matter.

pfSense use in VM best practices

@FLM,
If you're running multiple VMs to use with a virtualized pfSense box on the same hypervisor. I would suggest using vlans with pfSense box. Make multiple virtual adapters you pfSense box, representing different VLANs. Then put your VMs into the proper VM.
for pfSense ...
-
Make one of the adapters connect to your OUTSIDE....if possible directly to the internet facing router outside for internet connectivity.
-
Make another adapter(s) one that connect to your LAN(s)...then put all the VMs on the same virtual switch within that VLAN.
-
make another adapter one that connects to your DMZ...
-
if you're intending to connect this to a physical network, make another adapter do that
I would begin there.

Thank you Mr. Wong! Other than the pfSense course that I already reviewed, are there some other video episodes or internet references I could study to help me with the configuration?

@FLM,
no sure, you probably will find them if you search for them using your favorite search engine. I used to visit the community forums for pfSense often.
