I am a finished data protection practitioner and am looking to get more advanced knowledge in data protection to change careers.
I don't know which certification I should go for if I don't have experience in the area.
Should I go to CISSP or CISM?
Thank you
Marco

CISSP vs CISM

Here the hard thing about both exams. Both of them require 5 years of experience to get the certification. Now, that doesn't mean you can't take the exam now. You have a delayed or a provisional certification while you get work experience that qualifies. So, I could take the exam now, if I couldn't prove the experience, I would hopefully pass the exam, then I would only earn the certification when I gained and provided the documented experience needed even if years later (within a 5 year time of sitting for and passing that exam). You'll pass, then apply for the certification through the process they provide.
- Both are highly sought after, and considered advanced cybersecurity certifications.
- CISM is focused on management of security; CiSSP is focused on many areas including management.
*Both require CE -- 120 credits over 3 years....for CISSP, you must do a minimum of 40 hrs per year...whereas CISM you'll have to have a minimum of 20 hrs per year--this means if you do that you're other 2 years will be 50+ hrs each year. - Both ISC2 and ISACA has an annual maintenance fee.
*Both exam require you to think in terms of experience, which means you will get many questions that all the answers are right answers...you must pick the best for the scenario you're given...much harder than a regular multiple choice test.
Having said that and more, I'm not convinced these are certifications that should be stepping stones certifications as much as a career topper. But those are the nuts and bolts. Pick and choose wisely, as they also are expensive, especially as you're changing careers.
Maybe others will also chime in here to provide some more details, I hope so.
