Good question Sam,
Supposing that you are only using the cloud and not a hybrid, you would have to set up your own network in the cloud also and have your local computers point towards that network. But if you are using a hybrid solution just have your domain controllers on your network have access to the Azure active directory. I think the on- premises DC will link up to Azure.
Hope this helps!

@Sam , I hope all is well. @Douglas-Atwood is absolutely on the right track, but there is a bit more to the answer that might be helpful for you as well.
There are 2 basic ways to go with the Active Directory in Azure.
You can read more about each at the link below.
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory-domain-services/compare-identity-solutions
Depending on what you choose to go with, you would need to use "Domain Join" to get your endpoints to associate with the domain.
You can read more about how to do that with a managed instance here:
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory-domain-services/join-windows-vm
Hope that helps to get you moving in the right direction.
Good Luck !!
Cheers,
Adam
From my understanding was that i can use azure active directory or i can have a DC in azure like a windows server VM I’m azure an i wrong?
After reading the links Adam posted above, I will try extending the on-prem domain into azure by promoting a Windows Server VM to a DC of the existing on-prem environment. I am currently using a DNS Private Resolver. I should be able to use the DNS on the VM server and quit using the Private DNS resolver.
I have joined Win10 VMs to the on-prem domain, and I do not see any difference between the domain joined VM and the on-prem pcs (there is a VPN, of course).
Does anyone have any comments on that plan?
